Jaloka Avacharana in Ayurveda means therapeutic leech application, a method of Raktamokshana (bloodletting) mentioned in Sushruta Samhita.
It is a gentle, non-surgical way to remove vitiated blood (dushta rakta) from a localized area.
Meaning
-
Jaloka = leech
-
Avacharana = letting / application
-
So, Jaloka Avacharana = applying leeches to suck out impure blood.
Procedure Overview
-
Patient & Site Preparation
-
Area is cleaned with antiseptic and sometimes rubbed with turmeric paste (except exact spot of application).
-
Leeches are washed in medicated water to activate them.
-
-
Application
-
The leech is placed over the affected area.
-
It attaches to the skin and starts sucking blood.
-
During sucking, the leech injects natural anticoagulants (hirudin), vasodilators, and anesthetic substances.
-
-
Removal & Post-care
-
Once the leech stops sucking or the required amount of blood is removed, it is detached gently (often with turmeric powder).
-
The bite site is cleaned and dressed.
